Black Holes
A black hole is an object in space who's gravity is so strong, not even light can escape it's pull after it has fallen through! Since black holes do not let light escape, they are completely black, so you wouldn't be able to see it unless it was in front of a bright nebula. Black holes form when a star collapses under it's own weight, and compacts itself into an area many times small than before. There are different types of black holes too. There are super massive black holes, intermediate black holes, stellar mass black holes, and micro black holes. Scientists also think that there might be a super massive black hole in the middle of the Milky Way, but no one knows for sure. If an object becomes trapped in a black hole's gravity, it will continue to orbit it, just like Earth orbits the sun. There are more things that we don't know about black holes than we do, and NASA's telescope GLAST is going to be launched on 4-18-08, and one of its objectives is to learn more info about black holes. ![]() | ![]() |
